Towards evidence based emergency medicine: best BETs from the Manchester Royal Infirmary. BET 1: does the 'seatbelt sign' predict intra-abdominal injury after motor vehicle trauma in children?

Abstract

A short cut review was carried out to establish whether the seat belt sign was a significant predictor of intra-abdominal injury in children involved in motor vehicle collisions. 51 papers were found using the reported searches, of which three presented the best evidence to answer the clinical question.

The author, date and country of publication, patient group studied, study type, relevant outcomes, results and study weaknesses of these best papers are tabulated.

It is concluded that seatbelt sign appears to be associated with an increased risk of intra-abdominal injuries, especially gastrointestinal and pancreatic injuries.
